Children's Magical Garden - Helping kids and the community grow
Help Save the Garden from Development!
Children's Magical Garden, a community garden in the Lower East Side, where nature's magic has been happening for the past 31 years, has been torn in two. The property is part claimed by NYC Housing, and part by a private developer. On Wednesday, May 15th, the developer broke through the garden fence, dug through the center and fenced off their part of the community garden....
Next Action: We need to keep up the momentum in making the WHOLE garden permanent by Calling Mayor Bloomberg.
Here's what you can do: Continue to call 311. Give "A big thank you to Mayor Bloomberg on transferring two of our precious lots into Parks/GreenThumb" . AND Tell him to " Please negotiate the final step with the developer to make our entire community garden permanent and put it back in the little hands of her caretakers".
Breaking News: Giant First Step Victory! June 26th 2018
The City administration has agreed to transfer two of the three lots under Housing Development to the Parks Department for preservation under the city’s GreenThumb program.
“After a thorough assessment of all available options, we will be initiating the process of transferring the two city-owned lots to the Parks Department so they can be maintained as community gardening space.
The decision [by H.P.D.] was based on the overwhelming desire of the community to keep these two city-owned lots as gardening space; a position voiced and strongly supported by residents, Community Board 3 and the area’s elected officials,”
Eric Bederman, a spokesperson for the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development, told The Villager.
From Children's Magical Garden President-
Thanks so much to everyone who came out to the Community Board 3’s vote on the Parks Committee resolution to make the community garden permanent.
Over 40 of us were counted. It was a powerful and dramatic night.
The community board voted to transfer the two HPD claimed lots (outside of the fence the developer put in) to be transferred immediately into Parks GreenThumb, AND for the city to find a creative solution to make the entire garden, including the part currently claimed by a private developer that is behind the fence, whole and preserved.
The following day HPD came up with the above statement!
Great job everyone!
See you at the Big July 9th Celebration
